Mirror Mirror on Every Wall!
I think I have a slight obsession with mirrors!
Through doing this blog and posting regularly to Instagram, I have taken more photos of every room in the house than ever before, and because of that, I have realised just how many mirrors we actually have. They are in every room, and in some cases on every wall and some aren’t even up yet! (Well actually I don’t have one in the laundry room, but since realising that, I’ve caught myself wondering just where one might fit!)
So why do I have so many mirrors?
Well, to start with there are the frames. There are just so many to choose from in all different manner of styles, shapes, sizes, colours, textures and materials. There really is a mirror to suit every home and every budget. Long gone are the days when mirrors were a symbol of status and wealth, taking on average seven long years to save for, (hence seven years bad luck if you should break one), today mirrors are everywhere.
Then there is the fact that they are like living art, a bit like a window, with each reflection offering a snapshot of how any space looks at different times of day and night. After all, art you truly fall in love with is so hard to find – you can’t just go and shop for it, whereas mirrors……
Mirrors are also practical for obvious reasons in bathrooms, (especially the full length ones that we all nip past quickly so as not to give ourselves a fright), on dressing tables, in handbags – how else would we see what we looked like?
But most importantly mirrors reflect light and space.
You see my obsession isn’t really with mirrors at all, instead it is with the dynamics of a room, and how a lovely, reflective surface impacts that room and everything in it; doubling dimensions, increasing and projecting light into the gloomiest of corners, reflecting a twin world.
So it seems, my lovely, varied collection of mirrors is here to stay, it might even grow, and all the time it will bless me with a sense of expansive light and space – now there’s not much else you can put on a wall that will do that for you.

Since starting this blog – these two lovelies have also gone up.
The painted one was Steve’s Grans, which we inherited long ago in dark wood – its now resplendent in Elephant’s Breath by Farrow and Ball.
The ornate, gilt, oval mirror was one I couldn’t resist from my good friend’s shop, Gem of England in Burley, New Forest. She’s also a talented silversmith!
